Gerry Raffert R.I.P.

Thursday January 6, 2011

Here is to great memories and lively discussion here at the shop.  We listen to a lot of different music during the day here at Missoula Bicycle Works.  The music runs the gamut from Classical to Classic 70's, Rock and Roll to Rap and everything else in-between.  A mainstay of our musical selection is the occasional playing of Gerry Rafferty and his album City to City.  If you are a Gerry Rafferty fan, and who of you are not, this is a great album.

Gerry Rafferty passed away yesterday (January 4th, 2011) from liver disease. He struggled with alcoholism his entire adult life.  He is likely best remembered for his song Baker Street and the soulful and haunting saxophone intro as well as the equally distinctive guitar solo.  If you are my age his music will bring back memories of your youth, the places you lived and the friends with whom you first listened to "grown-up" music.

In the bike shop Baker Street's sax solo is more of an instigator to stimulate discussion about why some like the sax and why some do not.  We all really like the song but there are some in our midst who do not appreciate the expressive refrain.  Either way, we all appreciate his talent and the way his music embodies the sound of the 70's. R.I.P. Gerry, you will be missed.
