National Championships

Thursday August 7, 2008

Four young men from Montana are in Orange County right now taking on the best young cyclists in the nation.  Each will participate in three events, the time trial, criterium and Road Race.  The Time Trial was yesterday and it sounded like the biggest factor other than the other competitors was the heat.  Racers took off in 95 degree heat.

Nat Weston and Marshall Opel raced in the 17-18 year old division.  Marshall raced on a super sleek barely legal TT rig and managed to come in in 14th place.  Nat rode his trusty steed to a respectable 75th place.

In the 15-16 year old division Willy Zellmer rode a solid Time Trial and finished in 34th.

Joel Kramer, representing the future of junior racing in Montana also finished in 34th.

Tonight is the criterium.  There was some hesitation on the part of a couple of juniors who were considering not racing this evening to save their legs for the road race this weekend.  Fortunately after a brief discussion with one of their coaches they decided it would be in their best interest to race tonight.  Racing tonight they decided would give them another opportunity to watch and gauge their competition and the crit would give them some valuable speed work before going into the weekend road race.

Results will be updated when they come in so stay tuned.

Cheers,

BA
