The best of bad beer

Monday January 17, 2011

Like most bike shops we appreciate our beer.  Living in  Missoula we are quite fortunate to have some of the best breweries in the west here in town and Montana has a great selection of top notch breweries.

But what about the other stuff, the so-called cheap beer - Budweiser, Coors, Oly, Hamm's, Busch, and of course PBR to name only a few.

If you are curious which cheap beer is the best we have the answer.  Last weekend we conducted a very un-scientific taste contest to determine once and for all which cheap beer is best.  It was a double blind test so the tasters had no idea what they were drinking and the contest moderater and judging official had no idea which beer was being judged.

A selection of 16 beers was presented in four rounds of 2oz servings.  Four beers per round.  The top beer chosen advanced to the quarter-final round.  The final four were divided into two groups and went head-to-head - no pun intended. Maybe sort of intended.  Then it was down to the final two winners.

This was tough work and the debates were fierce but in the end the winner was a dark horse and a complete surprise to all who participate.

Time to break out the lime and salt.

And what do we do with this beer, in addition to drinking it. If you have ever joined us for Wednesday afternoon grill-out days then you might recognize Reed and Chad's famous Beer Chicken. No one makes beer chicken than those two. Crisp, juicy and seasoned to perfection.
