Hahanna Challenge - first ride update
Friday April 29, 2011Finally got in my first ride on the Hahanna. I thought I was going into my first ride with an open mind but, given how surprised I was with how well the ride went, I must have actually been expecting something less.
I rode up the MO-Z trail and up the Crazy Canyon trail. It is a good trail for a first ride test. Not too technical but a few sections to test the suspension, handling and climbing prowess. At 33lbs it was a bit heavy but I still managed to climb at a good clip. Perhaps after pedaling for three hours the weight would become a serious factor. Even with the taller front end the bike managed the climb well. The front end never lifted up and the front wheel tracked well so good so far.
The uncertainty of a new bike made me a bit tentative on the first descent. Soon enough though I found myself picking up speed and taking a few more risks. The bike handled quite well. The fork was surprisingly plush although that was only during compression. Without any rebound dampening the fork returned with a bit of a clunk as it topped out. But it did its job moving well over the rocks and bumps. Sure I would have preferred to adjust the spring rate, compression and rebound, but with I was given I was pleasantly surprised.
Speaking of surprises, the brakes gave me a few surprises. New brakes disc brakes take some time to burn in so I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now. The first time I grabbed the brakes before a high speed turn noting really happened. I grabbed a bit harder and suddenly the brakes grabbed but much harder than expected. Not a lot of modulation, they were either on or off. It took a bit of getting used to.
