Winter Bike Tour

Monday January 10, 2011

Sounds like a great trip. Portland to San Diego, along the Pacific Coast by bicycle. I just was a bit skeptical about the timing - 6 weeks December through January.  Bikes loaded and gear packed up Bryce and Emily started their trip off at the end of December just in time to enjoy one of the wettest storms to roll into Oregon in years.  But I don't think a bit of rain would get those two lively spirits down.  If you know Bryce and Emily you know they are tough as nails.  Emily was even starting this trip with very few road miles in her legs.  She spent the final few weeks of the fall finishing her final semester of college (congratulations!).

We have received a few updates from them here at Missoula Bicycle Works since they left. Here are a few of the more interesting stories from them.  We will try to get the updates out as we get them.

A couple of nights in motels was a necessity due to heavy rains but they still did their fair share of camping in the rain.  One night of camping was made a bit messy when raccoons tore into Emily's panniers and spread clothing all over the place.

They spent and evening with friends in San Francisco.  They wanted to make dinner for their hosts so they headed down to Trader Joe's and picked up provisions for dinner including some pasta and pasta sauce.  Dinner, it sounds like, was tasting pretty good until one of their hosts bit into something hard in the pasta sauce.  Turns out that a FROG LEG somehow made its way into the jar of Trader Joe's pasta sauce. Gross! Trader Joe's offered to replace the jar if they would return the offending jar. Uh, yeah.

I guess the heavy rains have not been as disruptive as I would have expected it to be.  Bryce said that the only detour was having to hop on the freeway for a short distance because the road they were going too go on was closed due to flooding - see below.

Last I heard our two intrepid adventurers were south of Santa Cruz on their way to San Luis Obispo and enjoying perfect January weather.  I think the good weather is supposed to last for a while.
